Hair Loss for Men

Hair is essential over one’s head giving shape, style and character to one’s figure and personality. Hair loss causing thin hair, receding hairline or baldness, is a common problem of men, especially in the Middle East. Hereditary factors are by far the most common, often from the mother’s side.
In men, hair loss begins in the late teens, becomes visible in the twenties, and may progress over the rest of one's life, eventually leading to complete balding of the top and back of the head.

Everyone with hair thinning should be on medical treatment and should only be stopped in case of allergy. Treatment, using topical minoxidil applications only at night, has the effect of slowing, stopping hair and in many cases can lead to hair regrowth. It should only be stopped in case of allergy.
Finasteride can be taken to further address the problem, to reverse hair loss by blocking the formation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which executes the thinning process. Most patients have a visible increase indensity while on Finasteride. Side effects of sexual dysfunction are extremely rare, especially at the reduced dose prescribed by Dr Touma. People with depression should also be careful about taking it. These medications need to be taken long term, since it takes between 3 and 24 months to see the full benefit, and results will be maintained as long as the medications are not stopped.

Platelet-rich plasma, is currently a key component of hair loss therapy. It involves the extraction of plasma from the patient’s blood through a blood draw done by our nurses in the clinic. Plasma provides all the nutritional value in the blood, and as it is injected into the scalp, provides a growth boost to the hair follicles. PRP is recommended in a series of three-monthly injections and a single session every three months for maintenance.

Hair transplantation is a very effective and safe method of restoring a natural hair density in men. Ideal candidates are those that have cosmetically noticeable thinning that cannot be improved with medical therapy alone. Hair transplantation is a very simple and safe procedure, and is best done early.

The hair is usually taken from the back of the scalp were hairs are usually abundant as tiny follicular units (FUEs) that are extracted once at a time or in some cases, particularly in men with long hair who prefer not to shave, as a strip of skin and hair which is stitched as an almost invisible fine line. The hairs are then separated under the microscope and reimplanted into the balding areas, one hair at a time (micrografts) in order to obtain a natural result. The whole procedure is done under local anesthesia and with very little inconvenience post-operatively. One or two sessions are generally enough for most people. Eyebrows, side burns (especially after face lift surgery) mustache, beard and other areas of the body can be treated as well.

Good medicine is costly. Dr Touma provides the utmost in safety and personalized care as well as his signature hairline that looks extremely natural even years after the initial transplantation, at very affordable fees. He recommends avoiding commercial cheap transplants especially abroad as safety is often compromised and the hairline obtained is usually extremely unnatural, a result that is very difficult to correct.
